An early morning crash claimed the lives of three men along the Whitefield main road in Porus, Manchester, yesterday.

The dead men have been identified as: 36-year-old Delroy Lindsay, construction worker of Strickland district, Melrose, Manchester; 29-year-old Oshane Walters, labourer of Melrose; and 42-year-old Derrick Salmon, of an unknown address.

The Porus police report that at about midnight, Lindsay, who was driving a white Toyota Corolla motor car, was heading towards Clarendon when it is alleged that he overtook a line of traffic and crashed in a BMW motor car on the opposite side of the road.

Both motor vehicles were extensively damaged.

Walters and Salmon, who were passengers in the Corolla along with the driver, were pinned and were eventually removed by members of the Manchester Fire Brigade.

All three men were taken to hospital where they were confirmed dead.

The driver and a passenger in the BMW motor car did not sustain any serious injuries.

A total of 235 persons have been killed in 206 fatal crashes since January of this year.

Director of the Road Safety Unit, Kenute Hare, is cautioning that safety in the road environment should not only be the responsibility of motorists but that pedestrians and other vulnerable road users should also be equally concerned and cautious.
